Let’s Learn about Britain!

In this blog, we will learn about “Who live in Britain and What languages are spoken there?” I hope you can enjoy my blog and this is going to help you to know about Britain!

Who live in Britain?

Of course, British people live there. However, as you know, there are people who are not from British. For my research, one out of eight people is not from there. Indian people were the highest foreign population in British before but Polish people are the highest foreign population now.

Top 5 foreign people living in British

  1. Poland
  2. India
  3. Pakistan
  4. Republic of Ireland
  5. Germany

When I was in New York for studying abroad, I saw a lot of Spanish and Korean people there. That is why I thought there are many Spanish people in British. In addition, Spain is one of European countries. It is also a reason that I thought but that is not true. I am surprised that there are a lot of Indian people in British. I didn’t know about that.

What languages are spoken in British?

If you go to British, maybe you can hear Polish and Indian. However, what languages can we hear except these languages there? Of course, people do speak English. But English is not the only indigenous language spoken there. There are a few more.

Welsh : It is the only language listed as an official language in any part of the UK. About a million people speak it. It is a Celtic language and English is Germanic, so the languages are definitely not mutually intelligible.

Scots : It is the second most spoken language in the UK. Around 1.5 million speakers in Scotland. Most people who speak Scots learned it as a second language and it is seen as as important way to keep the country’s culture alive.

The number of people who speak foreign languages in the UK are growing year by year. Over 300 different languages are spoken just in London. So you can enjoy hearing so many languages there. I am so interested in difference between American English and British English. So I introduce about that little bit here.

Spelling
American English : color British English : colour
American English : traveler British English : traveller
American English : airplane British English : aeroplane
Words (same meaning)
American English : elevator British English : lift
American English : pants British English : trousers
American English : first floor British English : ground floor

Do you guys already know about these? American People and British People speak same language but there are a lot of differences. It is so interesting. If you say “first floor, please.” in British, that means “second floor”. I think before going to British, we need to know about these tricky things.

Japanese spots in British

Bone Daddies It is a ramen bar in London. It takes about 7 minutes by walking from Piccadilly Circus station. You can eat ramen and drink alcohol. Perhaps, you can meet Japanese people who live there or visit there for sightseeing.

Eat Tokyo It is a Japanese food restaurant in London. It takes about 3 minutes by walking from Notting Hill Gate station. You can eat many kinds of Japanese food there. For example, sushi, tempura, and yakitori. This restaurant is very popular so maybe you need to reserve. If you would miss Japan, I recommend to go there.
