5 Big Differences Between Britain School and Japanese School

Today, I am going to write about Britain school and Japanese school. I am going to compare how they are different. I hope this blog would help you for knowing about Britain more. If you would like my blog, please check others too. 🙂

1. New School Term

In Japan, a new school term starts in April as you know but a new school term starts in September in Britain. So, if you are third grade in an elementary school, you are supposed to be forth grade in September. This system is same in America. However it is kind of weird for us. Isn’t it?

2. No Clubs

In Japan, all student are required join a club in Junior high school. We can choose whatever we want to join. Clubs are mostly sports clubs. For example, baseball, football, basketball and swim. Of course I was a member of track and field club when I was a junior high school student. There are also non-sports clubs. However, there are no clubs in Britain. All students usually do some sports after the classes but it is not a club. They can do any sports which they want. We usually do same sports during joining the school but students can change the sports in Britain.

3. Class Style

In Japan, teachers write something on a blackboard and then students write down same things in own notebooks. In contrast, teachers mostly don’t write on a blackboard in Britain. Their class style is discussion or presentation. So, we really don’t talk in classes but students need to talk in classes in Britain. I think this system is better than Japanese system because students are required to have own opinion whenever and they can get a communication and speaking skills in classes.

4. Lunch

In Japan, we must eat school lunch in elementary schools or junior high schools. Packed lunch and snacks are not allowed. Also only water or tea can be brought to drink. Never juice. The student’s lunches are calorie controlled to make sure that they are receiving a good balanced diet. In Britain, students can choose school lunch or packed lunch. In addition, they can bring snacks and juice to the school. It is not good for kids. There are children who eat only snacks in the school in Britain.

5. Coming to School

In Japan, all students must ride bikes to school. It does not matter what the weather is like. We must always ride a bike to school. Some students who live close to the school will often walk. I mean they must walk to school. Riding bike or walking to school is good for health! In Britain, there are school bus for going school. This is safety than Japanese because students don’t need to go back home by themselves. However, they can eat snacks in schools and they don’t need to walk or ride a bike for going school. I think it is not good for health.

Natsuki, I enjoyed reading your blog. Great title and subjects. One thing however, you didn’t answer the questions that were on the syllabus:

    1. Are students serious?
    2. Do they have part-time jobs?
    3. What do they do during the daytime/nighttime?

The questions on the syllabus are supposed to guide your writing and research, although you’ve done some great and unique research here!
